Father Ricci on the silver screen

Father Matteo Ricci, a Jesuit missionary to China, is enjoying a revival of interest nearly 400 years after his death.

As the Catholic News Agency reported over the weekend, a documentary about the priest was screened at the Venice Film Festival, one of the movie industry's most important events.

Pope Benedict XVI also made mention of him in a letter to the bishop of Marcerata, the Italian town in which Father Ricci was born.

“Matteo Ricci sets an example for our communities of people from different cultures and religions to bloom in the spirit of hospitality and mutual respect,” Pope Benedict wrote.
